Misericordia University To Host In-Person Ocean Sustainability Symposium Dec. 9 Focusing On Pennsylvania's Impacts On Marine Life

On December 9,
Misericordia University’s Environmental Studies program will host an in-person Ocean Sustainability Symposium (MOSS) featuring student projects and guest speakers explaining the importance of marine and ocean life.

The Symposium will be held in Insalaco Hall Room 219 on the Misericordia University campus in Dallas, Luzerne County.  The public is invited.

There will be a student project showcase from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Keynote speaker presentations will be from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

The Ocean Sustainability Symposium will focus on the impacts of marine life and its implications on living inland in Pennsylvania. Living by the Susquehanna River, part of the Chesapeake Bay estuary, we can trace our effects directly into the Atlantic Ocean.

The symposium will feature student projects from a variety of courses. Courses featured will include Essential Biology, Marine Biology, Introduction to Environmental Science, Introduction to Geographic Information Systems, Issues in Sustainability, and Scientific Writing.

Keynote speakers will highlight two marine biologists who will discuss their research.

The first speaker will be Misericordia’s Dr. Linda Auker, Assistant Professor of Biology and Program Director of Environmental Studies, presenting her research, “Using GIS to communicate biofouling in aquaculture.”

The second speaker is Dana Morse, Senior Extension Program Manager and Aquaculture Lead with Maine Sea Grant will deliver his work, "Biofouling and the Maine Shellfish Farming Industry.”

Dr. Auker explains how ocean sustainability is a concern to the NEPA region. Luzerne County is in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, which means our waterways affect the health of the Atlantic Ocean. Dr. Auker explains that “oceans support our health and wellness. We have a symbiosis with the ocean.”
