Chesapeake Bay Foundation: Pennsylvania Photos Win First And Second Place In Save The Bay Photo Contest

On May 12, the
Chesapeake Bay Foundation announced the winners of the 2025 Save The Bay Photo Contest-- Pennsylvania photos take First and Second Place.

The First Place photo was taken by George Kurzik of a sunset over Chickies Rock overlooking a bend in the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County.

The Second Place photo was taken by John Reitzel of an egret taking an earlymorning stroll along Pennsylvania's Susquehanna River near Washington Boro and the Conejohela Flats.

Kurzik, from Hellam, York County, said, “The sun and clouds and river were just right,” as he captured the view looking westward from Lancaster County, toward Accomac in York County.

Kurzik has anchored his tripod at Chiques Rock, near Marietta, many times. His passion for photography has had him focused on that same view of the river on about 20 different occasions, once in a blinding snowstorm. “There should be a 12-step program for people like me,” he adds.

Kurzik, 70 years old and retired, made the first-place image using a 10 mm fisheye lens on a Nikon D750 digital camera. He will receive the $500 first-place prize.

John Reitzel of Columbia, Lancaster County, caught an Egret taking an early morning stroll along the Susquehanna.

“I saw this beautiful Great White Egret on a piece of driftwood,” Reitzel says of the picture taken near Washington Boro and the Conejohela Flats in Lancaster County while kayaking the river. “The lighting was ideal for this backlit photo.”

This year, more than 250 photographers submitted nearly 600 striking images from across the watershed, and more than 4,000 people voted for their favorite photo in the Viewers' Choice contest.

“Pennsylvania is a gorgeous part of the Chesapeake watershed,” said Jennifer Wallace, CBF’s senior creative project manager and contest organizer. “It’s wonderful to have photographers out capturing that beauty and sharing it with CBF.”
