PA Resources Council Hosts Backyard Composting, Rain Barrel, Recycling Workshops, Webinars In July For Southwestern PA Residents

In July, the
Pennsylvania Resources Council will conduct environmental education webinars to teach southwestern Pennsylvania residents methods for protecting watersheds including using rain barrels and options for recycling a wide variety of materials.  

Following online instruction, individuals will pick up their rain barrels at PRC’s office in Pittsburgh.  

PRC will conduct three in-person workshops in Allegheny County in July.  A Watershed Awareness & Rain Barrel workshop will take place in South Park on July 6.  Backyard Composting Workshops will take place in Point Breeze/Pittsburgh on July 23 and Sewickley on July 28.  

Participants will take home rain barrels and compost bins at the conclusion of these workshops.

July Webinars

All webinars listed below take place online from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.--

-- July 19: Watershed Awareness & Rain Barrel Webinar: Discover how to harvest rainwater from your roof, store it in a barrel and use it in the landscape.  Learn about stormwater runoff problems and learn techniques to reduce watershed pollution. $80 course fee includes a 55-gallon rain barrel

-- July 21: Statewide Recycling & Waste Reduction Webinar: Learn recycling best practices concerning curbside collection, hard-to-recycle material, household chemicals and pharmaceutical disposal then ask questions during Q&A session.

In-Person Workshops

-- July 6: Watershed Awareness & Rain Barrel Workshop: Discover how to harvest rainwater from your roof, store it in a barrel and use it in the landscape.  Learn about stormwater runoff problems and learn techniques to reduce watershed pollution. The $80 course fee includes a 55-gallon rain barrel. South Park, Buffalo Inn, Buffalo Drive, South Park Township, PA 15129. 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

-- July 23: Backyard Composting Workshop: Learn the benefits of backyard composting, including the overall process, methods for setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance and ways to use finished compost.  The $70 course fee includes an 82-gallon compost bin.  Construction Junction, 214 N. Lexington Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15208. 10 – 11 a.m.

--  July 28: Backyard Composting Workshop: Learn the benefits of backyard composting, including the overall process, methods for setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance and ways to use finished compost.  The $70 course fee includes an 82-gallon compost bin. Fern Hollow Nature Center, 1901 Glen Mitchell Road, Sewickley, PA 15143. 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
