CIRCULAR ECONOMY – WASTE PLASTICS AS FOOD BASKETS

I asked myself what I’d do with the empty plastic soda bottles.

I always knew that plastics are a menace to the environment and felt the need to reuse these plastics in my own small way.

These same thoughts occurred to me when I saw empty plastic egg packs piling in my kitchen.

How on earth would I find use for such waste without complicating things?

Well, farming is one way.

FARMING IN PLASTICS

Livin in an apartment made space a real challenge when it came to farming.

But having plastic waste nearby meant that I could convert it into mini farms I could use to grow herb & veg.

And that’s precisely what I opted for.

Plastics, inspired me to grow what I could.

They’ve inspired others to go out of their comfort zones to build resilient urban farming systems.

Examples are given of communities that grow their food in waste plastics helping them cut down on food costs.

But business people are also not left behind.

The need for food in towns and cities makes it necessary to innovate ways to efficiently use space.

One way to do so is farming using hanged plastic containers.

In this case, the walls are not just part of real estate but potential vertical acreage!

But remember that I talked about a different type of plastic waste – the empty plastic egg trays.

How do these come handy with regard to farming?

SEEDLINGS

Plastic egg trays have compartments that could function as seedling holes.

So why not take advantage of them to grow seedlings for sale or for own consumption?

You see, seedling propagation requires patience – which many of us don’t have.

But it’s also best to propagate many crops from seedlings because they perform best this way.

In this case, plastic waste could easily convert into a food basket helping us grow food where none existed before.

IN CONCLUSION

Plastic water/soda bottles, PVC pipes, plastic storage containers etc. don’t belong to the rubbish dump.

Instead, why not use them to grow some medicinal herbs – sage, rosemary, basil etc.

The good thing is, you won’t need much space to do so…

And you’ll be improving your environment in the process.
