How can banana peels help fight the plastic waste crisis? According to Srinivas Janaswamy, associate professor of food chemistry at South Dakota State University, the peels, full of lignocellulosic material, can turned into biodegradable films — plastic-like material that will decompose in the environment and may one day replace petroleum-based plastic as the dominant food packaging material. Previously, Janaswamy has demonstrated how avocado peels and spent coffee grounds can utilized for bioplastics.
