Environmental Health Project Launches AirView Public, New App To Help Communities Protect Residents From Oil & Gas Pollution; Communities Can Join Today

On April 24, the Environmental Health Project launched its newest app, AirView Public, a free tool designed to help communities understand their air quality so that they can better protect residents from pollution harms. 

How does AirView Public work?

This online tool provides access to air quality readings alongside weather and pollution dispersion information. 

The combined information allows users to explore air quality readings in their community, identify pollution events, and see whether pollution events are widespread or local. 

It can help users understand whether a health issue like a headache or asthma attack happened during a time of poor air quality. 

It can also help users see the impact of industrial activity they notice in their community.

Users can access readings in AirView Public from 13 communities across Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio: Beaver, PA; Ligonier, PA; Mon Valley, PA; Neville Island/Coraopolis, PA; Union Township, PA; Yukon, PA; Youngstown, OH; Clymer, NY; Dover, NY; Peekskill, NY; Seneca Falls, NY; Slate Hill, NY; Tompkins/Ithaca, NY.

What is unique about AirView Public?

With AirView Public’s pollution mapping feature, users can view the path that air took to arrive at monitoring locations when those monitors recorded high pollution levels. 

This allows users to figure out what pollution sources could have contributed to those high readings. 

Air quality readings are available for the past eight days with a 1 to 2-hour lag, with weather and pollution dispersion information on a 24 to 36-hour lag.

How can communities sign up to benefit from AirView Public?

EHP hopes to expand access to many more communities and encourages interested users with existing air quality monitoring networks to fill out the form on the Resources page to add their monitors to AirView Public.

The Environmental Health Project is a nonpartisan, nonprofit public health organization that defends public health in the face of shale gas development. 

EHP provides frontline communities with timely monitoring, interpretation, and guidance while engaging diverse stakeholders: health professionals, researchers, community organizers, policy makers, and others.
