SSC, Patchwork Initiative & Others Celebrate Earth Day with the City of Fort Collins and CSU

The SSC Officers enjoyed tabling at the Fort Collins Earth Day Festival at Civic Center Park on April 20, and at Colorado State’s Annual Earth Day Celebration by the Lory Student Center on April 22.

Defend Our Future and the Avenir Museum joined the SSC officers to brave the biting cold at the Fort Collins Earth Day Festival from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m at the Civic Center Park. Fort Collins Utilities, who were present at the previous two SSC club meetings, were also tabling at the event. Organized by the Sustainable Living Association, the festival hosted tons of sustainable organizations, food trucks, and local artists who played woodland-inspired instrumentals on flutes and drums.

Citizens of Fort Collins were invited to stroll among the tables, many of which were handing out free plants, candy, mugs, trinkets, and more. SSC officers got the chance to speak with CSU students and community members about the purpose of the SSC and raise awareness for the SSC’s partner-projects like the Patchwork Initiative and the Native Plants Project.

The following Monday, the SSC tabled with the Patchwork Initiative and the School of Environmental Global Sustainability outside the Lory Student Center on and near the West Lawn from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Earth Day, April 22.

Various campus groups, student organizations, and student ambassadors were tabling alongside the sidewalks leading to the LSC. Students were invited to answer polls, play games, and get free items like tote bags and plants. An indie-rock band played live music on a stage set up on the lawn.

The officers loved engaging with curious students and community members wanting to get involved in sustainability, sparking meaningful conversations, and making connections that could positively contribute to upcoming and future projects.

Another successful Earth Day Celebration has passed, but it’s important to remember that every day is Earth Day. Every day is a chance to live a little more sustainably. You may not feel like you can make a difference, and that’s true – you alone can’t. But when we all work together, we all make a difference.

The Spring semester is coming to an end, and the SSC will cease meetings for the summer and return in the Fall Semester. But that doesn’t mean our duties to being sustainable come to an end: bike instead of drive, recycle and repurpose, leaving no trace, are among ways you can live more sustainably. Check out this article to read more on how you can more sustainable this summer.
