PJM Interconnection Electric Grid Operator Extends Hot Weather Maximum Generation Alert Thru July 28; Hot Weather Alert On July 29

On July 28, the regional electric grid operator PJM Interconnection extended its Maximum Generation Emergency Alert/Load Management Alert through July 28.  The Alert is an early notification that system conditions might require the use of "additional procedures" to deal with the heat wave.

A second alert, an EEA-1, is a North American Electric Reliability Corporation alert that is generally issued with the PJM Maximum Generation Alert, and means that all generating resources are online or have been scheduled.

PJM served a preliminary peak load of around 148,000 MW on July 27, and is currently forecasting a peak of around 155,000 MW for July 28.

Last year’s peak demand was approximately 149,000 MW.

July 29 Hot Weather Alert

PJM has also extended the Hot Weather Alert currently in effect for the RTO to July 29 for its Mid-Atlantic and Southern Regions.

A Hot Weather Alert helps to prepare transmission and generation personnel and facilities for extreme heat and/or humidity that may cause capacity problems on the grid. Temperatures are expected to be near or above 90 degrees in these regions, which drives up the demand for electricity.

The Mid-Atlantic Region is made up of the Atlantic City Electric, Baltimore Gas and Electric, Delmarva Power & Light, Jersey Central Power & Light, Met-Ed, Penelec, PECO Energy, Pepco, PPL Electric Utilities, PSE&G, and Orange & Rockland (Rockland Electric Company) transmission zones.

The PJM Southern Region consists of Dominion Virginia Power’s service territory.

PJM has issued this series of alerts to help prepare generators for the onset of intense heat, acting conservatively in light of recent extreme weather events that have occurred within the region and across the country.
