Asbury Woods Environmental Center Invites Public To Feb. 3 Trout In Classroom Unveiling In Erie

The
Asbury Woods Environmental Center in Erie will host an unveiling of their 2024 Trout In The Classroom Project from 11:00 to Noon for the trout-related activities, crafts, and giveaways.

On January 9th, Asbury Woods received a delivery of over 200 trout eggs as part of the national Trout in the Classroom program.

The eggs were sent to Asbury Woods by the Fish & Boat Commission and will be raised in tanks in the Asbury Woods exhibit hall until they are large enough to be released into local waterways.

The eggs have been in darkness in hatching baskets since their arrival.

On February 3rd, the eggs will have reached the next stage of their life cycle, trout sac fry, and they will be large enough to be released into their tank to swim freely.

“Asbury Woods raised our first batch of trout in 2023.  After successfully raising them and releasing them into Lake Pleasant last year, we’re excited to bring a new batch of eggs to our exhibit hall for the students and public to enjoy. We are grateful to have local partners join us to support this initiative which is a wonderful intersection of our environmental education and conservation mission,” said Jennifer Farrar, Executive Director at Asbury Woods.

Visit the Asbury Woods Trout In The Classroom webpage for more information.

Trout in the Classroom has been providing classrooms with the unique experience of raising their own trout from egg to fingerling for over 30 years.

This program, in partnership with Trout Unlimited, typically reaches almost 50,000 students annually in Pennsylvania.

The program has been in Pennsylvania since 2006, resulting in classrooms raising and releasing brown, rainbow, and brook trout.
