Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act : Known as CERCLA, this 1980 Act set to handle a growing problem of abandoned areas of the built environment that held and handled hazardous waste. It was signed by 46 states and the 28 European Union member states, coming into force on the 30 th October 2001.
