On February 12, 2024 , DEP conducted a complaint investigation in Waterford Township, Erie County related to conventional gas wells operated by Medina Res Dev Co. The wells included Calvin Niemeyer 1, 2 and 4.

DEP reported the following companies were penalized for failure to plug oil and gas wells after abandonment, several larger penalties included other violations-- -- Aiello Bros Oil (McKean) - $32,563 -- Allegheny Enterprises (Clarion, Elk) - $1,000 -- Charis Energy, Inc.
