Soluble phosphorus, the form of the metal that feeds cyanobacteria and generate harmful algal blooms, is discharged from farm fields through tile drains that occur across much of the farmland in Michigan and other Great Lakes states. That figure is consistent with the price tag for clearing American waters of contamination.
