Much ado about acceleration

Real Climate

Last year, Jim Hansen and colleagues published a long paper that included a figure suggesting that they expected that global temperature trends from 2011 to increase above the recent linear trends. This has meshed with another argument around whether an acceleration of global temperatures in recent decades can already be detected.

New study suggests the Atlantic overturning circulation AMOC “is on tipping course”

Real Climate

Its title says what it is about: “Physics-based early warning signal shows that AMOC is on tipping course.” is a major advance in AMOC stability science, coming from what I consider the world’s leading research hub for AMOC stability studies, in Utrecht/Holland. A new paper was published in Science Advances today.

A distraction due to errors, misunderstanding and misguided Norwegian statistics

Real Climate

A friend asked me if a discussion paper published on Statistics Norway’s website, ‘ To what extent are temperature levels changing due to greenhouse gas emissions? ’, was purposely timed for the next climate summit ( COP28 ). I don’t know the answer to his question. But this discussion paper is problematic for sure.

What Are the Benefits of Switching from Gasoline-Powered Cars and Trucks to Electric?

Union of Concerned Scientists

Transportation is the largest source of global warming emissions in the US and the passenger cars, trucks, and SUVs produce the majority of transportation emissions. Electric vehicles (EVs) can eliminate tailpipe emissions altogether and so are an attractive option for reducing both global-warming and smog-forming air pollution.

Not just another dot on the graph? Part II

Real Climate

The comparisons encompass surface air temperatures, mid-troposphere temperatures (global and tropical, and ‘corrected’), sea surface temperatures, and stratospheric temperatures. This success might seem confusing given the ongoing puzzlement about why 2023 was so astonishingly warm compared to recent years. References M.C.

New Choices for Cleaner EVs (And Some Room for Improvement)

Union of Concerned Scientists

This is a common question for drivers and car buyers, and one we’ve been answering for quite a while. It’s a complicated question, in part because electricity generation varies across the US and also because some EVs are more efficient than others. What does this mean for emissions? This car can drive 4.2

The AMOC: tipping this century, or not?

Real Climate

The basic idea starts with the observation that this region is far warmer than what is normal for that latitude, because the AMOC delivers a huge amount of heat into the area. The northern Atlantic region air temperature is a lot too warm for its latitude, which (in models) largely goes away when the AMOC is stopped. the zonal mean).
