Teaming Up with United By Blue for Cobbs Creek

The Academy and Philadelphia clothier United By Blue are joining forces and calling for community participation in a partnership aimed at removing trash and debris from the banks and trail system around Cobbs Creek in West Philadelphia.

On Saturday, Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers will join together to pick up trash before it has a chance to flow into the Delaware River, where it is harder to recover and a greater threat to wildlife. The cleanup is part of the Academy’s partnership with United By Blue aimed at removing 25,000 pounds of trash from Philadelphia-area streams in the Delaware River watershed.

Staggering amounts of bottles, cans, plastics, tires, construction debris and more are dumped in the Delaware and connecting waterways, even though the river supplies drinking water for 15 million people in four states. Cobbs Creek is an 11.8-mile-long tributary of Darby Creek in Delaware County and forms an approximate border between Montgomery and Delaware counties. After Cobbs Creek passes underneath Township Line Road, it forms the border between Philadelphia and Delaware counties.

For the Aug. 21 cleanup, volunteers will meet at the intersection of Thomas Avenue and Cobbs Creek Parkway to get geared up and head out with a team. United By Blue will provide gloves, bags and safety materials; participants should bring a mask and wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

The event is fully outdoors and efforts will be made to keep volunteer groups spread out. There will be games, giveaways and snacks to celebrate your impact. Cleanups are family friendly and ability inclusive. For more information and to register, visit the United By Blue partnership page on our website.
