The water south of Greenland has been cooling, so what causes that?

Real Climate

An AMOC weakening by 15 % thus cools the region at a rate of 0.15 x 10 14 W and according to model simulations can fully explain the observed cooling trend (2). Here we start by taking the Greenland mass loss rate into the ocean, times the temperature difference between the meltwater and the water it replaces.

Delayed harm and the politics of climate change, reconsidered

Legal Planet

Does the climate keep warming, stay the same, or even cool? There is another important aspect to what is sometimes called “committed warming,” “climate inertia,” or “zero emissions commitment,” an aspect I wrote about over a decade ago. As I noted in my article, that may still produce a backlash against continued climate action.

A Nobel pursuit

Real Climate

Last week, the Nobel physics prize was (half) awarded to Suki Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann for their work on climate prediction and the detection and attribution of climate change. This came as quite a surprise to the climate community – though it was welcomed warmly. Fred Singer, before his turn to the dark side).

Science denial is still an issue ahead of COP28

Real Climate

In an unchanging climate, the random fluctuations would lead to warming in some parts of the world and cooling in others. In a world with just random local fluctuations but no climate change, about half the weather stations would show a (more or less significant) warming, the other half a cooling.

Deciphering the ‘SPM AR6 WG1’ code

Real Climate

I followed with great interest the launch of the sixth assessment report Working Group 1 (The Physical Science Basis) from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on August 9th. The cause of our changing climate is the increase in atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations that we have released into the air.

Analysis: How fast can we stop Earth from warming??

A Greener Life

The ocean retains heat for much longer than land does. If people everywhere stopped burning fossil fuels tomorrow, stored heat would still continue to warm the atmosphere. The radiators are, in fact, cooling down, but their stored heat is still warming the air in the room. By Richard B. Ricky) Rood.
