Biodiesel and renewable diesel are closely related fuels made from the same oils and fats, which remain scarce, expensive, and linked to deforestation and food price spikes. Production capacity grew by 400 percent between 2019 and 2022 and based on announced and planned projects, it could double again by the end of 2024.

The question is how.

For the first time, the pact calls for a “phase down” the use of coal and fossil fuel subsidies. Leaders also announced a series of pacts to address aspects of climate change during the conference: Seven countries, led by Denmark and Costa Rica, joined the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance, which pledges to end their use of fossil fuels.
